It's such the little things at the end of the day

The girls at the office all went out after work tonite to some drinky outdoorsy social thingy in town. I love these gals dearly and, as they know, I am comfortable — to a fault — when it comes to working a room, but . . . at my age (and thankfully my contentment level with my life and most importantly, me), there is one thing that trumps going out socially: nesting at home.

This is what I love coming home to every day:

1) A 16-year-old daughter who fills me in on every detail of her day (and then is usually off to run her own errands, which does afford me some quiet alone time)
2) A big old snuggly dog who just needs the ball (in his case, it's a volleyball because it suits his size better) to be tossed a few hundred times while I sit in a chair and maybe, if I am so inclined, while I water plants.
3) A house that is usually cluttered with "1 dog, 2 girls" things but yet embraces me with such a big bear hug that I don't ever want to leave.
4) And my big chair in the "ken" (the room off the kitchen that is supposed to be the dining area, but that I've made into a sitting room). The picture shows the table next to my chair. The radio, an old General Electric that I do believe I've had since I was in my twenties, gets turned on to NPR. The glasses go on so that I can read whatever book or magazine needs attention (and the selection has NOTHING to do with work, mind you). And I am happy.

  1. We missed you tonight but are glad you are happy to go home - not everyone is! :)

  2. It is the little things that I find are so special. Planning a birthday weekend for my son, talking to my married daughter on the phone daily and hearing about being a newlywed. Those are truly special times. Enjoying a rainy day with a good book and puttering around the house,I'll take over an evening out anytime. Enjoy those little things. I do too. Jackie

  3. There's truly no place like home.

Sounds like a perfect evening to me.

  4. We did miss you. But, at the mere age of 26, I have to admit that most of the time I'd rather be doing the same thing as you. There's nothing like a home, and nothing like spending good quality time with people you love the most (even when it's just quality time with you and/or a good book).

However, all that being said, next we go - I'm dragging you along. Just because we love you so :)

  5. I know exactly how you feel Dawn. I run around like a mad woman at lunchtime doing errands so that when I leave work for home at night, I leave it. Occasionally, I'll get dragged to a work dinner with customers but it can only be at the end of the week. I like to go home, put on my uniform (nightgown-Mr. Bird Nest calls it that)and vedge out.

  6. i love being at home, sometimes though I think it's to my detriment, you know I often say no to things when really I should say yes to connect with others, build friendships, etc but like your points 1 to 4 those things are very important to me...isn't it wonderful to have a home that you love to stay in, I think this is something that I have and really don't cherish enough

nice post, it's jolted me into realising that my cottage is important
